What is Water Mousse and How to Use it

Water mousse is like sun in a bottle, you can give yourself the golden glow without ever stepping outside of your home.

What is Water Mousse?

Water mousse is similar to self-tanning lotions, but it is made of a lighter formula with an airy consistency making it less heavy on your skin. The texture of it allows the product to disperse better for a more even and natural streak-free look.

SOL by Jergens® Water Mousse is dye-free, cruelty-free, and dermatologist-tested. It is a translucent foam, meaning there is no color mess to manage. Plus, its passion fruit scent is pleasantly tropical but not overwhelming. Infused with coconut water with a tanning agent derived from natural sugars, tanning mousse darkens your skin while leaving it moisturized.

How is Water Mousse Different?

Sunless tanners are a wonderful alternative to tanning beds or time spent in the sun which can result in damage to the skin and increases the risk of skin cancer. There are unique kinds of self-tanning products for different situations and skin types, and they all have pros and cons. Here is how water mousse compares to the following products and when each might be best used:

Tanning Lotion

Tanning lotion can be very nourishing and is an excellent choice for dry skin all over the body. A tanning lotion is also good for those looking to improve their skin tone and texture, especially when it is specifically made to visibly firm the skin and is infused with collagen and elastin.

While any skin type can achieve a sunless tan with water mousse, the mousse form is best suited for oily to normal skin types since it is less moisturizing than tanning lotion, though it does still moisturize dry skin. While tanning lotion is applied much in the same fashion as water mousse, water mousse can dry more quickly and spread more easily than tanning lotion. Its colorless nature also makes it a less messy alternative.

Tanning Spray and Mists

Spray tans and mists offer immediate coloring but can result in the inhalation of products if proper safety precautions aren’t taken. They can also result in streaking since results are immediately visible and it can be difficult to control where exactly the spray or mist is spreading to.

In addition to being more cost-effective than spray tans, water mousse allows for a more precise and even application as you are completely in control of how and where it is applied. You can use an applicator mitt to help you blend the mousse evenly while keeping your palms clean. For those with a little more time, water mousse might be the better option.

Tanning Serums

Tanning serum, also called tanning drops, is blended into your daily moisturizer to achieve the level of tan you desire. Unlike water mousse, you do not apply the serum directly to your skin but instead, let the moisturizer carry it. It is not recommended that you mix serum into self-tanning moisturizer or products.

Serum is a good option for those with dry to normal skin since it requires moisturizer to build your tan. Since many people already use a daily facial moisturizer, serum is an excellent choice for conveniently adding a healthy glow to your daily routine. It also allows for customization of color by adding more or fewer drops as desired.

Try the dynamic duo of water mousse and tanning serum drops for the ultimate tanning experience. Many people choose to utilize a tanning serum for their face and water mousse for the rest of their body to create their ideal summer color.

How to Apply Water Mousse

To make sure you get the best results when using a self-tanner, prepare your skin and apply the product according to the directions.

Step-by-Step Directions

1. Prep the Skin

Before application, exfoliate the skin you will be applying the water mousse to.If hair is growing where you are planning to apply the product, you should shave the day before to give the water mousse a smooth area to work with.

Moisturize areas of the body that are dry such as elbows and feet where the color might gather. But do not moisturize the rest as doing so may prevent the mousse from effectively setting.

2. Apply Water Mousse

Spread water mousse with an applicator mitt or with your palms over the desired areas, use circular motions along the skin working over every part of the body to make sure each stretch of skin has the mousse evenly applied.

Although it is translucent, the mousse is designed to give off a slight gleam to help guide application so that you can see where the mousse has been successfully applied and where it still needs to be applied.

Continue applying in circular motions until all desired areas of the skin are covered.

3. After Application

If you didn’t use an applicator mitt, wash your hands as soon as you have finished applying the product. There is no need to wash the water mousse off.

Allow the mousse to dry for a few minutes before putting clothes on over it. Within a few hours, your tan will begin developing. Your skin should have a natural and even glow within hours.

Our Top Water Mousse Tips

For best results, try  Jergens® specially designed tanning applicator mitt. Not only does this help ensure an even distribution of water mousse, but it also saves you from getting any on your hands during application.

Don’t overapply on areas that are prone to dryness such as elbows, knees, feet, and ankles.
Apply shortly before bed when possible as you are least likely to sweat or otherwise alter your skin absorbing the mousse.

Although the water-based formula of water mousse is stain-free in most cases, you may want to lay a protective towel or extra sheet on your bed, or wear dark-colored, long-sleeved clothing, the first night that you apply the water mousse to ensure there is no transference.

Have paper napkins or towelettes ready should you get anywhere it was not intended to be.

Allow several hours before you get the skin wet.

Avoid exercise or other activities that might cause sweat to give your tan time to fully set.If after a day you would like a deeper color, we recommend that you reapply the water mousse.

After your tan sets, moisturize every day to help extend the life of it and keep it from fading. Also, using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is a great way to protect your skin.

Avoid exfoliating, waxing, and shaving after application as this will also help your tan last longer.

You don’t need to damage your skin in the sun or sunbed to have the bronzed look you desire. Skip the trip and get your perfect glow at home using SOL by Jergens® Self Tanning Water Mousse.
